Monique sighs as she stands. She holds the box containing the bracelet.

MONIQUE

I appreciate the gesture, Malcolm. I really do. But we need to keep things professional.

She grabs one of Malcolm’s hands and places the bracelet box in it. She then places her hand on his chest, near his heart.

MONIQUE (CONT’D)

Please know that having you as a partner, and a friend, has enriched my life too. I would never do anything to jeopardize that.

With that, Monique exits the room, returning to the festivities outside. Malcolm stands alone holding his would-be gift.

INT./EXT. MONTAGE OF BOOK TOUR-RELATED ACTIVITY - LATER

Malcolm and Monique sign books at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Raleigh’s Crabtree Valley Mall.

Malcolm responds to questions at a Harlem Book Fair forum in New York City.

Malcolm and Monique eat dinner in a ritzy restaurant at the Westin LAX Hotel.

Malcolm exits the bathroom, towel around his waist, after another long shower.

INT. REDEMPTION CHRISTIAN CHURCH (FRONT LOBBY) - DAY

From an A frame ladder, Malcolm paints the trim in the church’s front lobby. Through the plate glass window, Malcolm sees a sharply dressed Pastor Gordon walking toward him toting a leather briefcase. Pastor Gordon enters the building.

PASTOR GORDON

Brother Malcolm. Glad to see your newfound fame isn’t preventing you from following through with your commitments.

Malcolm hops off the ladder to join Pastor Gordon on the floor.

MALCOLM

Have to keep my church home looking good. Wouldn’t want the other pastors talkin’ about ya.

Pastor Gordon chuckles.

PASTOR GORDON

How are things going with the C-Y-C?

MALCOLM

Been meaning to talk with you about that.

(beat)

I have to step away, at least until this book tour is over.

PASTOR GORDON

You break the news to Deacon Reynolds, Brother Phillips?

MALCOLM

Not yet. Wanted to talk it over with you first.

PASTOR GORDON

You have my blessing, Malcolm. No hard feelings. I just know those boys are going to miss you, the energy you brought to the program.

(beat)

Heard they were hanging on your every word, especially when you got to talking about your father.

Malcolm places his paint brush on the edge of an open paint can.

MALCOLM

They’re not going to get rid of me that easy. I hope to be back for the graduation.

PASTOR GORDON

Would be great if you did. But don’t sweat it. You also have a wife and son to answer to. Let some of these other brothers step up to the plate.

(beat)

Have a blessed day, Malcolm.

MALCOLM

Thank you, Pastor. I will.

Malcolm grimaces as he watches Pastor Gordon walk down the hall and into his office.

EXT. REYNOLDS RESIDENCE (COURTYARD) - DAY

Yolanda exits the main house and walks toward the detached garage. She holds Brice’s most recent report card in her right hand.

INT. REYNOLDS RESIDENCE (DETACHED GARAGE) - CONTINUOUS

Yolanda enters, wasting little time placing Brice’s report card in front of Malcolm.

YOLANDA

Did you see this?

Malcolm, who is seated and talking to someone (i.e., Monique) on his cell phone, says goodbye and then shifts his attention to Yolanda.

MALCOLM

Yep. I saw it.

YOLANDA

What are you going to do about it then?

Malcolm stands and starts clearing the clutter off his desk.

MALCOLM

Have you talked to him?

(beat)

I have. The boy is concerned about us.
